I do a lot of browsing the internet, over the phone. It's a good escape that you can put down in the middle of an article, and not care if you forget to pick it up, again.
So, while on a stroll through EBay, Etsy, and other "buy me" lands, I came across this:
It's actually really nice looking, and I thought it would be fun to do...something cheaper.
| Things I bought fresh for this project. $3 and tax. |
The matting has a 4×6 opening, which is the cheapest picture size to print out at Walgreens--I think 33 cents.
| Outlined inside and outside the frame. |
| Outlined inside the cheapie matting. |
| There was about a 8th an inch movement in the matting. |
It's a weaker cardstock than I was tracing onto.
| The good thing about sketching for a template is that you can redo a line. |
| The stylistic outcome. |
After this, it's just separating the sub-parts. All six of them.
The side you want displayed, and the side of the stencils that have your sketch marks on them go face down, and you outline them on the foam.
| Testing out of the parts. |
Bought this duct tape for a different project, so it was lying around, free, for me to reinforce the flimsy matting. There are other options, like using it as a template to cut out matting from something you WANT to matt with.
| The angle I wanted on the top pieces. |
| Remember that I said it shifted around around an 8th an inch? |
A touch of tape holds the matting in place. Since I have it covered with duct tape, it did not need to go under the glass--its fairly protected. Which gave me a chance to glue down all the foam bits, and not have them go under the glass.
| Miscut one piece. |
I painted the foam with red nail polish. I misfit one piece, and had to trim it, but wound up trimming too much. So, I glued this piece down with a hot glue gun before painting it, only to find out that heat takes the impression out of the foam. Not a big deal because I just used a pencil to draw it back in, and then sealed it with nail polish. Only I would notice the mistake.
| Nearly done... |
Final thing I did was use some leftover India Ink to tone down the red, and then pasted in the two pictures I wanted to try out in this frame:
| Center face is the groom. |
| Yes, the same heads are on the same people. |
They are pics from the baby brother's wedding, which has 2 brothers, 2 cousins, and my spouse in them. Pretty fun to do.
